Before you start
Check that the screen matches your model number. Find your model number.
Back up your iPhone. Opening it breaks the factory water seal, so treat the repaired phone as no longer water resistant.
Plan on 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your model; the table below gives iFixit's estimate for each. If you are new to phone repair, a repair shop can fit the screen for you.
What you need
Every screen comes with opening tools and screen adhesive.
You will also need a hair dryer to soften the adhesive, tweezers, and clear packing tape to hold a cracked screen together. On iPhone 15 and later, isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth clean the old adhesive off the frame. iFixit's guides use a P2 pentalobe and a Y000 tri-point screwdriver on every model, a Phillips #000 or #00 as well on iPhone 11, 12, 13, 16 and 16 Pro, and a JIS 00 on iPhone 17 Pro.

During the swap
Run your battery down below 25% before you open the phone.
Disconnect the battery before you unplug the screen on iPhone X to iPhone 13, iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. On iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, every iPhone 16 model including the 16e, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, the battery stays connected during a screen swap; iFixit's guide for your model shows how to work around it. iFixit's iPhone 14 and 14 Plus guides have no battery step.
Your old screen carries parts the new one needs. Move them across before you close the phone:
- iPhone X to iPhone 12, every model: the earpiece speaker and the front sensor assembly. That assembly holds the flood illuminator, part of Face ID.
- iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max and 16e: the front sensor assembly.
- iPhone 15, 16 and 17, every model except the 16e, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max: the ambient light sensor.
- iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max: the front sensors.
- iPhone Air: iFixit's guide stops once the screen is out. Contact us before you close the phone.
iFixit's free guide for your model shows every step: search "iPhone [your model] Screen Replacement" on ifixit.com.
Test before you seal
Connect the new screen and switch the phone on before you peel the adhesive liners. Check:
- The picture fills the screen with no dead pixels.
- Touch works across the whole screen, edges included.
- You hear a caller through the earpiece.
- The screen goes dark when you hold the phone to your ear during a call.
- Face ID recognizes you.
If anything is wrong, contact us before you seal the phone and we will find a solution.
If something is wrong
If the screen stays black, touch does not respond, or touch stops along one edge, switch the phone off, disconnect the battery if your model's guide does, then unplug the screen's connectors and plug them back in. Peel any protective film off the sensor windows. If it still does not work, contact us before you seal the phone.
After the swap
On iPhone 11 and later, Settings will show the new display as an "Unknown Part". Apple says this might affect the trade-in value, and that it does not affect your ability to use your iPhone.
Apple also lists what can differ with a display it did not make: True Tone might not work correctly, maximum brightness might be lower, display color calibration might be incorrect, Multi-Touch might not respond on parts of the screen, and the battery might drain unintentionally.
On iPhone 13 models, Face ID needs iOS 15.2 or later after a screen replacement.
